Kyle Shepherd - Cape Music Warrior
My experience of KYLE SHEPHERD.
Kyle and my youngest son were at school together and when Kyle started to make waves in the Cape Town jazz scene my son reminded me that Kyle's performance abilities go a long way back.
I only got to work with him in 2007 when he was gigging with one of Robbie Jansen's band line-ups. In fact the first gig he did for me was at a jazz festival in Malaysia, in a slot that was meant for Robbie. Due to Robbie's lung problems, he was not allowed to travel, so the band under Jack Momple's leadership, later to become known as the Cape Jazz Band (CJB), were booked to take to the slot.
That event was followed about a year later with a short tour to France where Kyle recorded a couple of songs and appeared with Jack, the late Alex van Heerden and bass player Jonathan Rubain, in festival shows. At one of the recording sessions the band recorded a version the Cape traditional, Die Maan Skyn so Helder, which really impressed me and years later I licensed the recording from the producer for the 4th volume of the Cape Jazz series.
That was in 2013. In the time between 2007 and 2013 Kyle paid a lot of dues along side Hilton Schilder, Stephen Erasmus and others, but most importantly with one of Kyle's major influences, Zim Ngqawana. He also issued two solo albums. In 2014 he landed the accolade of being named the Standard Bank Young Jazz artist of the year in South Africa. He has also done concert tours to Japan, Europe and the USA. Also in 2013 he came to the studio for me to contribute to the CJB album.
Since then he has done more touring and further albums, several of which, I am proud to say that my company assists in the digital distribution thereof.
When it came to recording some of the classics of Cape Jazz for solo piano, Kyle was immediately one pianist who had to be approached. I am glad to have recorded two very innovative contributions for him for the 5th volume of the album series. One track is on the CD version of the album. It is a substantial re-work of a Stephen Erasmus composition now named, Dagga Party. The second is Kyle's take on the classic, CT Blues.
